Shirlene Small

Shirlene Small is Chief Financial Officer of The Kaleidoscope Group.  Serving in this role since 2004 Shirlene, who has over 20 years of accounting, tax and finance experience, is responsible for setting the financial direction of the organization and ensuring its economic strength and viability.  She oversees accounting and treasury operations, provides financial advisement on current business operations and opportunities, and serves as the financial spokesperson and liaison to external organizations.

In addition to her responsibilities with The Kaleidoscope Group Shirlene serves as Managing Partner of Emerging Business Solutions Group LLC (EBS) a full-service CPA firm with offices in Chicago, Illinois and Dexter, Michigan.  EBS provides assurance, financial management and financial education services to corporate, government and emerging business clients, as well as individuals.  Shirlene’s industry specialties include franchises, retail, professional services and not-for-profit.

Prior to launching EBS Shirlene worked for McDonald’s Corporation in Oak Brook, Illinois as a manager in the McOpCo Accounting & Special Areas Group.  She was responsible for managing financial reporting processes and business analysis for McDonald’s fifteen-hundred domestic company-owned restaurants.  She also served as a project manager in McDonald’s International Accounting Group where she managed a multi-departmental systems conversation project and re-engineering projects for the International Accounting Department and its fifty-plus subsidiaries and affiliates.  Additionally, Shirlene provided reporting support for the International Executive Management Team, as well as the Treasury Department for the management of foreign exchange currencies as it related to foreign investments and debt.  Prior to her tenure at McDonald’s, Shirlene worked as an auditor for the accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand (now Price Waterhouse Coopers) where she specialized in financial audits of manufacturing, real estate, and not-for-profit clients.

Shirlene earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from DePaul University and has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1989.  She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Illinois CPA Society, the National Association of Black Accountants, and the Inroads Alumni Association.

Shirlene resides in Flossmoor, Illinois with her husband Derrick and sons Derrick Jr. and Donovan.  When she’s not working with clients, Shirlene enjoys reading, listening to music, and attending her sons’ sporting events.  She also enjoys working with community organizations that promote education, economic empowerment and social justice.  Shirlene regularly volunteers with Kwame Nkrumah Academy Charter School, Trinity United Church of Christ Child Care Centers, Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference and The Beloved Community of St. Sabina.
